What Is Direct Store Delivery (DSD)?

 Direct Store Delivery

Direct Store Delivery or DSD is a method of shipping or transportation where products are delivered directly from the manufacturer to the retailer instead of having one or more stopping points along the way.

Normally, manufacturers deliver to a distribution center where products are reorganized and perhaps repackaged before delivery. Direct store delivery is a faster and more efficient way to deliver product that is useful under certain circumstances.

Why is DSD used?

There are many advantages to DSD. For retailers that cannot store a lot of product and need frequent deliveries to keep shelves restocked, DSD is a fast and effective solution.

By bypassing a distribution center, everything moves faster and more efficiently within the supply chain. There is both time and money saved for both the shipper and the receiver.

Another advantage for the retailer is greater control over inventory. This can spell cost savings and increased sales.

There are, however, some disadvantages. Sometimes products are repackaged at a distribution center to be used in special sales or marketing campaigns. This is not possible when DSD is used. Also, the supplier or manufacturer may have compelling organizational reasons for using a distribution hub.
