What Is Logistics?

In general, logistics is the art and science of organizing a complex operation, and it is derived from the military definition of the term. In the context of “shipping and logistics,” such as for our business, 18 Wheels Logistics, logistics is organizing the packing, unpacking, storage, warehousing, and shipping of product in the most efficient and cost-effective way possible

So, in one sense, this type of business is like logic problem and a puzzle. Very large companies would have a logistics department handling the transport and shipping of any type of product. Smaller companies often hire a third-party logistics company to handle these business requirements because it is so challenging and complex. Logistics companies are constantly evaluating and assessing every part of the shipping equation, improving performance, efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

One reason that third-party logistics companies are chosen is for the storage and warehousing capabilities. That, by itself, is an extremely complicated operation that most smaller companies are not ready for. Receiving products, packing, unpacking, shrink wrapping, loading, unloading, and storage requires specific equipment, experience, and expertise.

Then there is the trucking angle. If products are transported by trucks, then many different types of trucks, chassis, drivers, and mechanics may be required to keep everything operating at peak efficiency.

Managing logistics always requires a talented and dedicated team of individuals who work together well to make shipping work. Getting a product seamlessly from point A to point B is likely much more complicated than you may think. If you need help with your product’s logistics, please let us make it easy for you. This is our business.
